Another veteran and I discussed this idea briefly in school...It took a little bit, but I finally got around to it. I can't take credit for the modeling, unfortunately I don't know who to give credit to either. I animated the rig and camera work in Maya 2009 and did my compositing and final renderings in Adobe After Effects.
